IV. Connector Assembly (cont)
B. Assembling Insert Into Shell
- First identify the Mating Face of the silicone insert. The mating face of a socket insert has long tapered towers. The mating face of a pin insert has recessed tapered holes to receive the towers of the socket insert.
- On Shell Style 1RMC (plug assemblies), slide coupling nut onto plug shell.
- Lightly abrade full interior of shell housing with medium emery cloth.
- Clean inside of shell and outside diameter of insert with a cleaning solvent such as acetone.
- Apply a silicone primer to the inside of the shell.
- Apply a silicone adhesive to O.D. of insert. Push the insert into the rear of the shell with the Mating Face end first. Be sure insert is properly aligned with key or keyway of the shell. Push insert into shell until insert bottoms on internal ledge of shell. Wipe off any excess adhesive.
- On insert configurations 1607, 1211 and 1221, slide black plastic compression ring in behind insert. On other configurations, assemble retaining ring into groove behind insert. Allow silicone adhesive to cure.
C. Assembling Contacts Into Insert
- Be sure all hardware to make a complete assembly is either on the connector, on the cable or can be slid onto the other end of the cable or wires.
- The rear end of some configurations, such as the 1615, should be potted to ensure good corona properties. As a preparatory step, lightly abrade the rear inside shell housing with medium emery cloth if not previously performed. Clean thoroughly with cleaning solvent. Prime abraded area with same primer used in step B5.
- Prime rear section of contacts with primer used in step B5. When using silicone wire, thoroughly clean the wire with alcohol. Apply a silicone adhesive to the primed section of the contacts and to the wire approximately 1/2 inch behind the contact. The same silicone adhesive used on the insert may be used on the contacts. Be careful not to get any adhesive on the mating areas of the pin and socket contacts. Push contacts into rear of insert until they pop into place. Wipe off any excess adhesive and allow adhesive to cure.
- To ensure good corona properties of the connector assembly, the rear end of the shell housing should be potted to fill air gaps between wire and insert holes and wire and shell housing using an RTV silicone rubber.
- Thread on any remaining hardware such as backshell or cable clamps. After testing, hardware may be secured with a liquid thread lock product
- Before mating connector assemblies, contact surface areas should be examined to ensure that they are clean and free of any foreign debris.
